![]() It generally set me against players from my region and each match was played without any issue… save for the fact that I was massacred each game, but sadly that lies with my lack of ability and I can’t blame it on the game. I found it easier to find matches than last year and the stability of the connection was quite adequate. Luckily, I feel that they did improve the netcode and online experience when I played against other people. But if not analyzed under a microscope, it’s practically the same gaming experience, which isn’t a bad thing since PES 2020 had reached an extremely high level. It seems that the AI is a bit smarter when we play against the computer and the games are more demanding, I would also say that defending is a little harder and leaving any open space can be fatal, and it may be that passing was also subject to some sort of change. To the trained eye there might be some small adjustments to the gameplay. However, just as it doesn’t try to fix what wasn’t broken, sadly what PES 2020 didn’t do well isn’t corrected this year. It looks just as good as before and is quite an attractive game. There are also no large improvements to the visuals. This year there’s no new collision or scoring system, no innovative mechanics that even the veterans will have to learn. ![]() So what is this new PES format? It’s updated squads, jerseys, and the licensed players (together with their physical appearance), but without substantial changes to the playing experience. So what we have this year is merely a “season update”. Let us hope that Konami learnt from its mistakes and that in 2021 we’ll have a PES that takes advantage of all the benefits of the Unreal engine and the next generation. The first releases with the FOX Engine were the worst in the 25 years of this saga’s history, and it took a great deal to regain the confidence of their users. However, the last time they changed the engine was a disaster. ![]() Getting a soccer game with the industry’s quintessential engine is an important reason to be hopeful. Of course, there’s a logical explanation to all this, and it’s that Konami decided to take a sabbatical to prepare next year’s edition, where they’ll be using the Unreal Engine for the first time. Unfortunately, everything to do with menus, interface, soundtrack, commentary, TV broadcast, replays, loading times, and other elements off the pitch, still leave a lot to be desired.īut why am I talking so much about last year’s release in a PES 2021 review? Well, because it’s practically the same game. Konami’s game has also taken a large leap forwards in terms of its visuals, with an increasingly spectacular lighting system, amazingly simulated pitches, quite colorful bleachers (but this is still a weak point for both FIFA as well as PES), photorealistic faces of players and highly remarkable graphics in general. Amazing animations of every type and sufficiently varied that we’re still seeing new ones hours after starting playing, smart passes, a somewhat more paused but authentic rhythm of play, physics that try to simulate the imprecisions present in the sport itself, more capable goalies, and an overall experience that is at the same time accessible, fun and realistic. eFootball PES 2020 represented the highest point of the saga since the PS2 days and, while it’s still behind FIFA when it comes to game modes, presentation and infrastructure, the experience when we have control in our hands has become superlative. On the back of a great deal of work, listening to the community, and focusing on improving gameplay and getting the most from the FOX Engine, Konami decided to offer the best experience possible on the pitch and they definitely managed to do that. ![]() But in the last few years, the story started to change. FIFA took over the market with a very comprehensive online section and the Ultimate Team mode, which became EA’s golden goose. That affection for PES suffered a pretty large hit during the middle of the PS3 and 360 era, and the damage worsened at the beginning of the current generation, which is beginning to end. That love at first sight between the audience and the Konami saga that was forged with games like International Superstar Soccer Deluxe, but later grew to untold heights with Winning Eleven 4 on PS1 and Winning Eleven 10 on PS2 (that’s still probably the best soccer game of all time). It was perhaps the first game to really understand what soccer means to fans and how they live it. Without a doubt it revolutionized the genre and entered the hearts of soccer lovers as no other title since. It’s been 25 years since the first edition of the soccer games saga we knew as Winning Eleven at the time, but that today is released under the Pro Evolution Soccer ( PES) name.
